Map of our Travel Route

Some of you asked for it, so here’s a link to a map of our travels. We will update it periodically.

Here’s what our current trip looks like as of the date of this posting.

Santa Barbara Visit 2

We were lucky enough to spend a few more warm, sunny days and full moon nights in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA recently. My cousin Ann invited us to stay in her guest room and we were more than pleased to do so. We are extremely grateful for the generous hospitality extended to us by Ann as well as my brother Jeff and his wife Paula, at whose Camarillo, CA home we are currently headquartered. SoCal has been very good to us this winter and we are happy to be here.

Our first afternoon was spent on the Santa Barbara waterfront. We savored Yellowfin Tuna fish tacos at a beachside cafe before strolling the beach, yacht harbor, and wharf. That evening Ann joined us for dinner out at a trendy downtown bistro.

The next day we took a very informative guided tour of the lovely Santa Barbara Mission before visiting a couple of pretty city parks, a few art galleries, historic sites, and the historical museum.

We came upon the art studios below quite by accident. It felt like a wonderful place to create, so we tried to capture its unusual character in photographs.

The following photograph had to be taken because our family photo album includes one of my sister and mother at this same spot in 1945. One of the great pleasures of Santa Barbara is getting to tour restored historic properties, many of which are still in use. El Paseo, California’s first shopping center, was built in the 1920s and today features a variety of unique  gift shops, jewelry stores, galleries, restaurants, and offices nestled amid romantic gardens and Spanish courtyards.

Late that afternoon we took in the panoramic view from the tower at the renowned County Courthouse.

On our final day, our friend Diane had arranged for us to join a private garden tour at the hilltop home of a collector and professional grower of exotic plants.

A Danish Delight

Recently we spent a couple days at Solvang, CA, a charming Danish enclave north of Santa Barbara. What’s the first thing we did? Went to a Danish bakery of course!

So many choices…

Next up was the Vintage Motorcycle Museum where we viewed an array of fine machines, all collected by one eccentric gentleman. Here’s a photo sampling. You can see more at their website.

No photos of it, but we had the best pizza of our lives at Cecco. Brick oven baked and topped with wild boar sausage, mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, and arugula. Accompanied by a Caesar salad and glass of Refugio Savignon Blanc.

The next day we toured the Elderhoy Museum of History and Art where we learned about when and why the Danes came to Solvang, viewed Danish architecture, artifacts, and crafts as well as a photo exhibit about the Sami people of Lapland.

We were very lucky to be in Solvang during their slowest time of year. It can get crazy crowded during warmer months. As you can see from the photo below, the weather was gorgeous, albeit cool, especially at night when it dipped below freezing. Here’s one of several decorative windmills around town.

More California Dreamin’

This past week has been all about exploring the beaches of California’s Central Coast just north of Santa Barbara and it feels a little like California Dreaming as the weather has been superb. Not summer, mind you, but lots of sunshine.

Our first stop was barely out of town in Goleta, where we hiked around the Sperling Preserve to the bluffs above the ocean and around the Monarch Butterfly Grove. We did see some good clusters of the butterflies hanging on the eucalyptus trees, but were unable to adequately capture them in photos. You will have to use your imagination,or visit their website here

Heading north on Route 1 we stopped at Gaviota State Park thinking we’d camp there overnight. Upon arrival we found that it had been closed since October due to a sewer problem. No mention of it on their website though… Anyway, as we turned around to leave, we got a big surprise – another Westy was heading in! We were all very excited about the encounter, had a quick visit, took photos and headed in our opposite directions. They are on a two-year adventure south to Mexico and South America! I almost forgot to mention that they live in Providence, Rhode Island. Quite a coincidence I’d say!

Gaviota0871

We proceeded to Lompoc where Boondocker’s Welcome host Judy offered up her driveway for our restful two-night stay. We had a very nice visit with Judy who also provided lots of travel tips and advice from her years of traveling in her Roadtrek 190. Thank you Judy, good luck with your upcoming nuptials.

In Lompoc we visited La Purisima Mission State Park where, thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps, the most fully restored Spanish Mission in the world stands. We took a very informative tour guided by a costumed docent. If you have an interest in the California Missions, you might want to view the park’s excellent video at the bottom of the page here.

It’s not often one gets to ring mission bells, so when we were asked if we wanted to, we said you bet!
These melodious bells were made in Lima, Peru.

I know, you’re waiting to see the beaches I mentioned, right? OK. We were off to one that I’d read about for years but never visited because it’s a little off the beaten trail… Jalama Beach State Park. The drive down the 14-mile access road was a bit trying for the driver, but as the passenger I enjoyed what felt like a trip back in time as ranches and farms covered the rolling hills spotted with California Oak trees.

Next up was an overnight at Vandenberg Air Force Base, where we were surprised to find another beautiful remote beach that reminded us of some on Cape Cod.

Good thing we didn’t plan on swimming, eh? It was a bit too cool anyway.

Next stop – beautiful Montana de Oro State Park, near Los Osos, CA, where several remote beaches and coves delighted our senses.

An added treat was a grand array of stars viewed through our skylight from our bed pillows.

Next up was Morro Bay and the beautiful little coastal town of Cayucos. If you’re ever in the area, the Natural History Museum in Morro Bay State Park is definitely worth an hour of your time. We found it quite by accident as we parked nearby to have our lunch.

I began this post with a comment about the superb weather we’ve been experienced and now it’s actually raining as we sit overlooking the beach at Cayucos shown in the photo above. A bit of a bummer for us, but the area REALLY needs it. California is now experiencing it’s third year of drought and it shows. I lived here for 33 years and I’ve never seen it so dry. It used to be referred to as the “Green and Golden” state, but now everything is brown. You can even see that some of the trees are suffering. Therefore, we are rejoicing in the wet stuff while hoping it doesn’t last too long. The forecast calls for more sunshine tomorrow with cooler temps.

Santa Cruz Island Outing

Last Saturday my brother Jeff and his wife Paula joined us on a day trip to Santa Cruz Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park off the coast near Ventura, CA. The boat ride over took just about an hour with one brief whale sighting and several dolphins playing alongside. The weather, sunny and warm, could not have been better, especially since both the day before and after were dreary.

We didn’t do it on this trip, but you can kayak through dozens of sea caves here.

This urchin eating crow was the first sign of wildlife I saw ashore.

We began our tour at Scorpion Ranch where a few buildings are still intact. These include a private residence for the former owner (by agreement with the Department of the Interior), a small museum, blacksmith shop and some out buildings. There are also remains of several vehicles and equipment that had been used on the ranches.

We then proceeded on a hike to Cavern Point, stopping several times along the way so the Ranger could enlighten us about the fascinating natural and human history of the island. These islands are considered “The Galapagos of North America” by many because the isolation has allowed evolution to proceed independently here producing 145 plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world.

Literally hundreds of dolphins road our boat’s wake on the way back to the mainland. We also got to witness a massing of birds feeding on a school of small fish stirred up to the surface by some unseen creatures below. No photograph could ever capture the scene, but I present this one to provide a sampling.

You Can’t Beat SoCal This Winter

We did not plan to spend our entire winter in SoCal, but we can’t think of a single reason to leave the spectacular weather we’ve been experiencing. Accommodating family members and friends in the area are making it even more enjoyable!

SantaBarbara0681Santa Barbara coastline

We spent a couple of days and nights with my brother Jeff and his wife Paula where they live in Camarillo, CA before visiting another high school friend of mine, Diane, at her lovely home in Santa Barbara, CA. Jeff and Paula joined us on a fabulous day trip out to Santa Cruz Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park. We joined members of Paula’s family at Carpinteria Beach State Park for a cookout, where I also met up with Karen, a friend who moved out here from Rhode Island, for a great walk (and talk) overlooking a seal rookery.

Quite the social whirl indeed (for us anyway)…fun, fun, fun!

Here are a couple of photos of the succulent gardens that surround Diane’s house.

And isn’t she just hilariously original?!?

While we were unofficially “camped” at Ventura Harbor, before and after our Santa Cruz Island outing, a youth surfing championship took place. It was quite a scene, so of course I couldn’t resist taking a few photographs of the adorable little surfkins and their proud parents. The waves were quite large (not represented well in photos) with quite a serious riptide present, so the excitement and anxiety was palpable.
